Mai Tai Martini


Mai tai martinis are basically concoctions that are based on the ingredients like rum, Curacao and lime juice and are commonly seen in the Polynesian countries. This drink became famous in the 50's and the 60's and there after every hardcore tikiphile insisted that their drink be mixed according to the original recipe.

Here are a few of the special mai tai martini recipes which can be tried at home.

The ingredients to the first version of the mai tai martini recipe are as follows:
  • Light rum -1 1/2 ounce
  • Creme de almond- 1/2 ounce
  • Triple sec -1/2 an ounce
  • Sweet and sour mix
  • Pine apple juice
  • Dark rum - 1/2 ounce
The method of preparation is as follows:
  • Take the light rum, the creme de almond and the triple sec in the order mentioned into a Collins glass and add to the mixture an equal amount of sweet and sour mix alongwith the pineapple juice.
  • Next add the dark rum and put in a large straw. Serve with a garnish of a wedge of pineapple.
The second version of the mai tai martini recipe makes use of the following ingredients:
  • 3 ounces of white rum
  • 1 1/2 ounce of orgeat syrup
  • 1 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • 4 1/2 ounces of sweet and sour mix
The method of preparation is as follows:
  • Take the ingredients in a cocktail shaker half filled with ice cubes and shake well.
  • Make sure that the ingredients are well mixed and then strain out into a Collins glass over a few cubes of ice.
  • Garnish using a fresh cherry and serve.
The original mai tai recipe is as follows:

The ingredients include:
  • 1 ounce light rum
  • 1 ounce gold rum
  • 1/2 ounce orange curacao liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce of almond liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice
  • 1 ounce of dark rum
The method of preparation is as follows:
  • Take all the ingredients except for the dark rum and mix together in a martini shaker.
  • Once the ingredients are mixed properly strain them over ice cubes into an old fashioned glass.
  • Tops with dark rum and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
