Healthy Martini

Did you know that in moderation, the Martini could actually be good for you?

Surprised? Well, to see how this is possible, we must dive into the recipe for the Class Martini Recipe.

The Classic Martini


Ingredients


- 4 parts Gin or Vodka (Gin is used traditionally but vodka is increasingly popular)
- 1 part Sweet or Dry Vermouth
- 1 Olive to garnish

Directions


1. Mix Gin or Vodka and Vermouth together with crushed ice in a Martini Shaker.
2. Shake, shake, shake and pour into Martini glass
3. Please an Olive inside the glass as the classic garnish

Simple right? Well, lets take a look at those ingredients.

Olive


The Olive is a species of small tree native to the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean region. The fruit of the Olive tree is generally consumed and is an excellent source of monounsaturated fats and Vitamin E. Vitamin E and monounsaturated fats protect our cells from not oxidizing and generating free radicals thus helping to prevent heart disease, cancer and more! In addition, the anti inflammatory actions of monounsaturated fats, Vitamin E, polyphenols in Olives help reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This Vitamin E may even help to reduce the frequency and/or the intensity of hot flashes in menopausal women.

Gin, Vodka and Vermouth


Gin is a juniper berry flavoured spirit made by redistilling white grain spirit and raw cane sugar which has been flavoured with juniper berries.

Vodka is a clear, distilled beverage which consists of mostly ethanol and water purified by multiple distillation from a fermented substance like potatoes or grain.

Vermouth is a fortified wine flavoured with aromatic herbs and spices using closely-guarded recipes. Some of the herbs used may include cardamom, cinnamon, marjoram and chamomile.

There has been several studies about the health benefits of moderate these alcohols.

The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has reported that the greatest health and longevity benefits result from one to two drinks per day. Moderate drinkers live longer than both abstainers and over consumers, a finding supported by research in other countries.

One experimental research study conducted by the University of Moscow, Russia found that 2 ounces of vodka per day can help prevent colon cancer! It is believed that vodka also helps in treating heart problems by acting upon the blood.

Infact everything in a Martini seems good for you, as long as you drink in moderation. Now, armed with information, I present to you, the Healthy Martini!

Healthy Martini Recipe


Ingredients


- 1.5 oz Gin or Vodka
- 0.5 oz Vermouth
- 3 Olive

Directions


1. Mix Gin/Vodka and Vermouth together with ice in a martini shaker.
2. Shake, shake, shake and pour into Martini glass
3. Place Olives inside the glass as the classic garnish
4. Drink daily ;)
